In the ninth year of the Yonghe era, the year of Gui Chou.
The “Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Collection,” widely regarded as the finest example of running script in the world, is best known in Feng Chengsu’s Shenlong edition—the most widely circulated and most vibrant version.
I have always admired the relaxed, flowing quality of the brushwork in this piece—the more than twenty “之” characters, each with its own unique form, where no single stroke is repetitive or rigid.
So I took the time to extract the character forms from the original Shenlong Edition manuscript, organize, calibrate, and package them into a ready-to-use TrueType font: Lanting Shenlong.
